Advanced Open Water

The Advanced course samples 5 different types of dives designed to give you more experience under the supervision of an instructor. Each dive is called an “Adventure Dive” and it is possible to sign up for just a couple of these and finish the Advanced at another time or with another PADI center.

Course Content

There are two dives required for the full Advanced course has 2 mandatory dives: Deep Diver and Underwater Navigator. The other 3 dives can be agreed with the instructor and will depend on site availability and requests from other students. As Komodo is famous for currents we highly recommend Drift Diver since we have many great sites to choose from and our instructors are extra knowledgable about these kinds of dives. The Peak Performance Buoyancy is not compulsory but we think it should be; it teaches you to have more control in the water and how to conserve your air. If you join our liveaboard then Night Diver is our 3rd recommendation so that you will not miss out on the great night dives in the park!

1. Deep Diver (Mandatory)
   Discover the underwater wonders lying deeper than 18m (max 30m) for the first time under the supervision of an instructor.
2. Underwater Navigator (Mandatory)
   Get the skills to get out on your own! Gain confidence in your underwater navigation abilities by fine-tuning compass and natural navigation skills.
3. Drift Diver (Recommended)
   Safely hitch a ride on to one of our world-famous currents and learn how to position and behave yourself for best control and least kicking. We have many great drift dive sites, including Manta Point.
4. Peak Performance Buoyancy (Recommended)
   This dive is useful both for new divers and those that have already dived for a while. It is packed with skills improving your buoyancy, fin kicking, and air consumption.
5. Night Diver (Recommended liveaboard)
   See the reef under a whole new light (your torchlight)! Observe the marine creatures that dominate the reefs at night but hide during the day. The night dive is only available on our liveaboard.
6. Aware Fish ID
   Learn to identify the major fish families in one of the richest marine regions in the world. Learn about marine survey methodology allowing you to give back a little on every dive.
7. Aware Shark Conservation
   Learn about the important role of the shark in the eco-system, the threats they are facing, and how to identify different species.
8. Underwater Naturalist
   It isn’t just fish down there! Learn about all the other integral parts that make Komodo’s marine ecosystem so rich and unique and how to best protect this fragile world.
9. Underwater Digital Photography
   Learn how to set your camera right and then using light, angle, background, and good buoyancy skills to get those amazing shots. The dive involves how not to damage or disturb any marine life.
